Backgammon – Three General Plans

[ English ]

In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 fundamental techniques employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between tactics instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable tactic at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your challenger rolls an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in serious trouble because they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position filled by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It must be played when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this case, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
