Backgammon – 3 Basic Plans

[ English ]

In astonishingly simple terms, there are three chief plans used. You want to be able to switch techniques instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to barricade in the opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is then in big-time calamity taking into account that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or higher anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are extremely behind as this strategy much improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have any other extra pieces to move! In this case, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
